Texas Giant Centipede

Scolopendra heros

Texas giant centipede is the common name for it, and it is pretty big. We saw this one in the parking garage at work as we were returning from lunch yesterday. It was moving quickly, so my camera work is not so great.

There is some interesting info from the Dallas Zoo about the sting from being bitten. It's not very dangerous to humans.

Thank you for the great photos. I also live in Austin, Texas and a Giant Red and Black centipede somehow found it's way in my bed sheets tonight and bit me. It stings like crazy. I was glad to be able to find your photo on the internet so I now know what bit me.

Oh my God! That is my biggest fear, that one will get me in bed! I found one of these scrambling across my living room floor a few months ago - my first one. It terrified me! I feel bad about it now, because I love animals, but I killed it. But I just found one - with a BABY - in a shed and just watched it for awhile then let it be. I didn't want to separate it from its baby and felt that sparing their lives maybe made up for the one I killed out of ignorance. They still terrify me! If one ended up in my bed I would probably never sleep there again!
